What is a MEGA file?
A .MEGA file is most commonly an incomplete or temporary download file created by the MEGAsync desktop application. When you download a file from the MEGA cloud storage service, the software temporarily appends the .MEGA extension to the filename. Once the download finishes, the app removes the extension, revealing the original MP4, RAR, ZIP, or JPG file. In a completely different context, a .MEGA file can also be a Megacubo XML Metafile used by the Megacubo software to manage media streams.
How to open MEGA files?
The standard way to handle a temporary .MEGA file is to let the MEGAsync client finish the download process. If a download breaks and cannot resume, you can sometimes manually rename the file extension back to its original format. For example, if you were downloading a video, renaming it to .mp4 might let you play the partial data in a standard media player. Similarly, an incomplete .zip can sometimes be extracted using WinZip. If the file is a Megacubo XML Metafile, you must use the Megacubo application to read it.
Identify the format online
Because a .MEGA file has multiple possible meanings and can wrap any data type, we recommend using viewer.online/mega to identify the actual format of your file. The viewer.online/mega platform analyzes .MEGA files to identify their exact format and creator software, shows which programs can open the file, and usually previews it.
Summary
Because .MEGA files often use the known MP4 format or other standard archives like ZIP and RAR, viewer.online/mega can safely open and display them online, eliminating compatibility problems.
